The Graduate of course is in my top 5 favorite films. So of course I had to upgrade to Blu-ray.

I was excited that all the reviews say that the DVD included the extras from The Graduate (40th Anniversary Collector’s Edition)

The DVD that came with my Bluray however did not. The version that came with mine was the 2005 MGM DVD release that only includes the trailer and 4:3 (not 16:9) letter-boxed version of the film. The Graduate

It seems Fox is just throwing in whatever DVD copies they have on hand so while some people are getting the 40th Anniversary DVD not all copies include that version.

Admittedly the packaging doesn’t say that any of the DVDs extras are included but it’s still disappointing when you read in reviews that they are included only to find that they are not in the copy you get. It’s a weak move on Fox’s part to include the DVD with extras in some copies and not in others.

I contacted Fox about this and they aren’t willing to do anything about it.

So buyer beware NOT ALL COPIES INCLUDE THE DVD EXTRAS and there is no way to tell whether or not it does without opening it.

I love this movie, always loved it, even in Lo-Def or No Def.

Is Anne Bancroft hotter in HD/Blu-Ray? Is mad man Dustin Hoffman’s insane screaming, “Eeeeellllaaaaine!” at the top of his lungs as Katherine Ross stands at the alter about to say “I do,” more riveting and dramatic in Hi-Def?

Very possibly.

I don’t know, honestly. This movie is so fabulous everytime I watch it though- Bancroft’s Mrs. Robinson is the consumate cougar, and her performance is iconic. And she IS hot, as well as deliciously, stalkerishly creepy in this role! You don’t need high def to appreciate that.

Dustin Hoffman’s portrayal of the confused and obsessed Benjamin Braddock is pitch perfect. This story never gets old, it’s classic, timeless, and set to a sweet Simon & Garfunkel soundtrack.

If you’re replacing your collection with blu-ray, or if your looking for something to round out a “buy one-get one” deal, get this. It’s an important movie, whatever definition you’ve got.

…and if that quote didn’t tell you the new big budget big screen “Land of the Lost” film isn’t exactly directed at the Saturday morning TV crowd… I fondly recall spending those mornings in the 70’s with Will, Holly, Dr. Marshall and the Sleestak, so when I heard Will Ferrell would be taking the lead I was content in the knowledge that the campiness of the original Sid and Marty Kroft show would be preserved. As fate would have it this preservation extends even to the cheesy theme song which Ferrell nearly performs in one scene…this theme song pretty much covers the series and movie’s premise…the aforementioned characters, on a “less than” routine expedition via an earthquake and a tachyon gadget (this part is new) end up in a parallel space they call the “Land of the Lost” complete with prehistoric critters and lizardmen. Unlike the series they need to find Dr. Marshall’s misplaced gadget in order to get home, this leads to lots of mishaps and sight gags. But as I mentioned, this is not your father’s “Land of the Lost” this is a Will Ferrell, albeit watered down, but nonetheless, a Will Ferrell film, so as you’d expect there is overt crude references flying aplenty, including hot Sleestak-on-Sleestak action (not really on screen), nothing to cringe-worthy…although some drug and vague sexual jokes.

“LOTL” is bookended by a “TODAY” show sequence in which Matt himself interviews Dr. Marshall about is kooky space/time theories and then again later interviews a vindicated Dr. Marshall at the movie’s end. Dr. Marshall is classic Will Ferrell, the pompous, dimwitted boob he plays soooo well, so you know precisely what you will get upon entering the theater. This time he is a nutty paleontologist who has a strange fixation on “Chorus Line” and comfort food binges. “Land of the Lost” is more “Elf” than “Anchorman”, I guess. What is new here is the digital dino and big bug eye candy, not really the norm for a Ferrell film, more in the spirit of Ringo Starr’s “Caveman” than “Jurassic Park” though (especially the cave-boy-speak).

The kitsch aside, if possible, “LOTL” includes some impressive sets, some true to the original show, like the Sleestak ruins and some less Kroft, but equally cool, parallel world Bermuda Triangle parallel world clutter ala desert complete with missing ships, planes and gas stations. Also true to the Kroft look are the Sleestak lizard people (one of which is voiced by Leonard Nimoy a.k.a Spock) who look largely unchanged, but I’d have bought a ticket just for them anyway.

I went into this film not expecting a whole lot. But because of curiosity from watching it growing up and the fact that my kids wanted to see it I ended up being satisfied with my 1.5 hours spent. The scenes that bookend the movie with Matt Lauer were the best, but I also enjoyed Ferrell’s constant harrassment of Cha-ka. The drug part could have been used for something that was actually funny. Danny McBride had some funny moments that were over the head of my kids (thank goodness) mostly with Anna Friel who played it straight through the whole movie and was there to provide some `eye candy’ for the late teens and older crowd. CGI effects were good and the Sleestacks were great! Not a lot of laugh out loud moments for me (except the bookends) but worth a rental on a weekend night and some popcorn. PG-13 for a reason- you know your own kids, go with your own judgment.

No doubt about it, the 196-minute unrated director’s cut of Troy represents a significant improvement over the film’s original 162-minute theatrical release–and not just because it has more sex and violence. As director Wolfgang Petersen notes in his new “Troy Revisited” video introduction to this 2-disc special edition, he didn’t have the time or directorial discretion (prior to Troy’s release in 2004) to present a cut that more closely matched his vision for the film. Three years later, Petersen approached the film with a more relaxed perspective, and the result is a well-crafted expansion on a film that was previously underrated, with 30 minutes of previously unseen material. Character dynamics have been improved and intensified; the epic-scale narrative is now easier to follow, with greater emphasis on the inner turmoil of Achilles (well played by Brad Pitt) and his rivalry with Hector (Eric Bana); and viewers will feel a more satisfying escalation of tension and suspense from battle to battle. The film’s enormous battle scenes (impressively enhanced with CGI) are bloodier and gorier, but they’re also more effectively integrated into the political story, which goes beyond Homer’s The Iliad and the death of Hector to incorporate elements of Virgil and a more revealing study of the differences between Trojan king Priam (Peter O’Toole) and his megalomanical Greek rival, king Agamemnon (Brian Cox), whose lust for revenge is now one of the film’s most powerful ingredients. Some of Troy’s original weaknesses remain (such as Orlando Bloom’s wimpy performance as Paris), but overall, this director’s cut easily justifies its existence, regardless of the film’s overblown and historically inaccurate depiction of Troy as a gigantic city of massive columns and statuary. The good parts are better, and the not-so-good parts are more easily forgiven. And no matter how you cut it, Troy is a lavish feast for the eyes. –Jeff Shannon
